Here is a new post special to Apartment Dwellers. Some special notes though.  The idea that their food plans will last very long or be enough to suffice may be exaggerated and reliant on electricity and other utilities, use at you own risk.  I continue to support the idea that you should stay in your apartment/condo ONLY as long a it is safe.  As soon as you realize the situation may become long term, and the golden Horde has moved on, then you should retreat to your community or prearranged location.  Don’t have one yet?  GET ONE!  There are community’s that will take you, if you talk to them IN ADVANCE.

Solar Flares

March 22, 2012
The BlankMonkey

So, you have heard a lot about EMP’s and solar flares and you want to know more.  Over at SB they have told you how to get early warning from the Australian Government, but after you sign up, the emails look like gibberish.  Well let me help out;

So, after you go to HTTP://www.ips.gov.au you can sign up to receive their email alerts on solar flares.  What you will get are 3 emails for each event.  One saying it started, one saying it is in progress, and one saying it has ended.  The second two will give you the information you want.  The second one should have something like this (the highlighted part is what matters)

Current X-ray Flux : 1.33e-05 (M1.3)
Maximum X-ray Flux of 1.85e-05 (M1.9) at 07:52 UT
Estimated Flare End (below M1.0 level) at 08:08 UT

The third email should have something like this;

Approximate Flare Start  :  15-03-2012 0744 UT
Approximate Flare Maximum:  15-03-2012 0752 UT  at Flux M 1.9
Approximate Flare End    :  15-03-2012 0810 UT

The Magnetic Flux is the import thing here, and is measured by the chart below, courtesy of ips.  But the short of it is this.  There will be a Letter followed by a number.  What is important is that the most of the alerts can be ignored, and you need only be worried about Flux that is great then X1 or Y1, these are the big ones.   So if there is a big Flux of X, then it is time to start paying attention…

Meaning of X-Ray Fluxes From the Sun

The Solar X-Ray flux arises from two factors. Firstly, there is flux coming from sunspot regions and other features – the background flux – and this varies slowly from day-to-day. Secondly, solar flares produce large amounts of X-ray flux, but this is concentrated to the duration of the flare which is usually from minutes to several hours.

Solar X-Ray Flux is described as follows:

 Level Flux (watts/sq meter) Description
A less than 10-8 Very Low Background A between 10-8 and 10-7 Low Background
B between 10-7 and 10-6 Moderate Background
C between 10-6 and 10-5 High Background/Low Flare
M between 10-5 and 10-4 Moderate Flare
X between 10-4 and 10-3 High Flare
Y greater than 10-3 Extreme Flare

where ** indicates a power [e.g. 10-2 equals 0.01]. Within these levels, a number is used to specify the flux. Hence a value M3.2 indicates that the flux is 3.2 x 10-5watts/sq meter.

The Y classification of flares is new; and these extremely large flares are often still classed as X flares with a qualifying number greater than 10. Hence a Y1.6 flare is exactly the same as an X16 one.

Sleep Apnea and no power – And Todays Links

The BlankMonkey

Do you have sleep Apnea? What are you supposed to do if you are caught without power?  After a lot/little research, I found this (use at your own risk)

++Sleep in sitting position

——-keep legs elevated to avoid swelling

——-keep head from falling forward

++sleep on your side, with pillows

++bite guard to push your lower jaw forward.

Here is an interesting read I found on an Apnea website;

Re: Survival Techniques when you can’t use CPAP

Postby Otter on Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:56 am

To quiet my snoring back in the day, I used to gargle with hydrogen peroxide. Yes, the 3% solution in the brown bottle from the drugstore. It’s not very pleasant, but it won’t hurt you, and it will tighten up the back of your throat a bit. It was first recommended to me by a dentist for an abscess when my molars were coming through. I thought he was insane, but an older friend who knew much about health and home remedies told me it was safe, and I used it off and on for years without any ill effects. Swallowing it would definitely not be healthy, though, so pay attention to what you’re doing.

Some say hydrogen peroxide absolutely must be diluted to 1.5% (1/2 from the bottle, 1/2 water or mouthwash), but I never had any trouble using 3% full strength. OTOH, everyone is different, and you may be more sensitive to it than I am. There are probably better astringents, but I had it around and it worked. When it quit working, I learned to sleep only on my side. When that quit working, I wound up here. Hence, H2O2 is couple steps back from what you really need, but it might help a little while you’re off the hose.

I haven’t thought of this in a long time. I should have picked up a bottle when I was at the drugstore tonight. It might help me get through the next week or so until I’ve got my equipment and have figured out how to use it.

Nothing.  Surprising that there is little to add.  Maybe not, as I grow more aware, there is less that I consider worthy of re posting.  I will say this, the media is reporting the economy is starting to get better, and the Iran rhetoric is coming down.  hope and pray, but is it the calm before the storm?  I will try to post a note about solar flares today, I think people will find useful.  There are several posts out that warn you about them, but little to tell you what the numbers mean.  If I get a chance anyway, that is my next post…
